2019-2020 Kindergarten Registration for Lockwood is now open.
Kindergarten at Lockwood is a robust all-day learning experience! With a focus on working toward state standards in the core learning components, our students also enjoy a diverse range of activities, including art, science, play explorations, and social/emotional development. Each day, students have two outside recesses, eat lunch in a big cafeteria, and also go to a special instructor for Music, PE, or Library. It all makes for quite a big day!
Teachers have high expectations for their students and use positive reinforcement to build strong and supportive learning communities within the classroom. With over forty years of combined teaching experience, our youngest learners are in some of the very best hands available. Parent opportunities to volunteer also add extra support to the busy school day. We are excited to have your family join our Lockwood community!
Parents can pick up registration packets for the 2019-20 school year in the main office between 8:30 and 4:00 daily.
Make your plans now to attend one of our informational tours for parents on March 22nd and March 26th. Both will be from 10 to 10:45 AM. Please check in at the main office.
Is your student starting Kindergarten this fall? Learn about registration and special events...
To enter kindergarten, your student must be five years old on or before August 31.
Kindergarten registration begins at your school. Enrollment packets are available in mid to late January in the front office of all Northshore elementary schools. Your neighborhood school may also hold special parent tours, an orientation, or open house in the spring or late summer before school begins. Watch your school's website and the mail for back-to-school registration details, school calendar and start dates, bus routes and pick-up times.
Additional information on registering for kindergarten and forms can be found on the District website. Some schools may have additional forms for you to fill out about your student. Information about school registration dates and times are published online on the district homepage and school websites and newsletters.
A district-wide kindergarten orientation is provided in March. Teachers, administrators, and curriculum specialists present parents with information about the Northshore School District's kindergarten program. The orientation is intended for parents only and does not require registration to attend.
Orientation for students entering the 2019-20 school year is Wednesday, March 20, 2019 at the Northshore Performing Arts Center on the Bothell High School campus.
The kindergarten program in the Northshore School District provides children a foundation for academic success and develops an enthusiasm for life-long learning. Student outcomes are standards-based and focus on the whole child: academically, socially, emotionally, and physically.
Before school begins, kindergarten teachers will meet with families to get to know the students, their families, and their stories. Additionally, teachers evaluate students in many areas to determine students' strengths. This helps teachers plan a program based on the needs of the children.
The developmentally appropriate learning environment provides substantial opportunities to learn through purposeful play that honors student choice and provides teacher-guided, interactive small-group, and large group experiences. The kindergarten school year is an important time to provide students with rich, relevant learning experiences that allow them to reach goals that are both challenging and achievable regardless of their varied experiences and backgrounds upon entering kindergarten.
Resources to help your kindergarten student:
Kindergarten Hi Cap Process
The kindergarten eligibility process incorporates two steps--screening AND assessment. All kindergarten students will be automatically screened for potential highly capable eligibility.
Students meeting the criteria threshold on the screening tool will move on to assessment. Parents of students moving on to the assessment level will be notified. Per Washington state law, parent permission is required to assess a student. Assessments will occur during the school day and will be administered by trained proctors.
The Highly Capable web page is an additional resource.
Early Entrance for Kindergarten
Although Northshore does not encourage early entry for the vast majority of students, application for testing for early entrance is available at parent expense for students who turn 5 September 1 through November 30. Students who turn 5 on December 1 and beyond will enter kindergarten age appropriately.
Please read the Early Entrance to Kindergarten FAQs before completing the application.
Additional early entrance information is available through the Office of Elementary Education 425.408.7705.
Applications for 2019-20 can be downloaded here. Applications will be accepted through June 28. Late applications are not accepted.
